Project 1 New Distribution Center in Woodridge, Illinois (2001)
Due to its continued growth, a home decor products importer ran out of room in its land-locked, multi-story loft facilities near downtown Chicago. This created an opportunity for establishing a more efficient distribution operation elsewhere once the decision to relocate was made. Wellington Associates defined the new building requirements, prepared detailed plans for the preferred design alternative, assisted with equipment procurement and oversaw its installation. The move consolidated 160,000 sq.ft. of scattered, sub-standard warehousing space into a modern 150,000 sq.ft. facility which employs very narrow aisle swing-reach machines, push-back storage system, gravity flow shelves, and compact low level order picking trucks. The newly constructed space offers significantly expanded storage capacity (pallet positions up by 140%) and efficient material flow.
